A panic attack is the build up of severe anxiety that finally spirals out of control and can feel like an explosion in your mind. The attack can happen for no apparent reason and can be a source of great frustration for the person suffering them as the lack of explanation is as scary as the attack itself.

At the height of my anxiety the slightest thing could set the attack off and I often used the analogy that I feared the fear of having an attack. In other words it was a self perpetuating cycle of fear and i no longer knew what it was that caused my attacks I simply feared life for no apparent reason!!

There are a number of symptoms that can occur during a panic attack, and I dont suggest they will be the same for everyone, but the most important thing to remember is these symptoms are purely sensations and will not cause you harm;

  • Heightened awareness of senses
  • A thumping heart rate
  • Sweaty palms
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Feeling sick
  • Struggling for breath
  • Gripped with fear
  • In severe attacks a feeling of being removed from yourself

Panic attacks are not caused by a physical problem with the organs in your body but your mindset and as such the sensations you feel during an attack will not harm you so there really is nothing to fear.
